What's the difference between short-term and long-term?
Assets held for one year or less are short-term and taxed at ordinary income rates (up to 37%). Assets held longer than one year are long-term and taxed at preferential rates: 0%, 15%, or 20% depending on your income.
What are the 2025 long-term capital gains rates?
For single filers: 0% on taxable income up to $48,350; 15% from $48,350 to $533,400; 20% above $533,400. These thresholds are for total taxable income including the gains.
Is there an additional tax on investment income?
Yes — the Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) adds 3.8% on investment income for individuals with MAGI above $200,000 ($250,000 MFJ). This calculator includes it when applicable.
